19 Incredible Uses for Hyssop Essential Oil

Hyssop essential oil (buy it here) is made from the hyssop plant. It is an herbaceous plant in the mint family that is harvested twice a year in much the same way as hay. After it is mowed, it is dried and sold as an herb or turned into wonderfully fragrant essential oil.

It has an almost pine scent that is herbal and slightly sweet at the same time. There are so many incredible uses for this wonderful oil. You can treat your conditions and smell as good as a field of fresh-mowed sweet hay.

1. Improve Circulation

Massage hyssop essential oil into your chest, legs, arms and lower back to improve circulation. Mix it with a carrier oil at the rate of 1 to 3 drops per teaspoon before applying it to your skin. You can rub it all over, really, or even take a warm bath with 3 to 5 drops of hyssop oil added to the water. Just don’t get it in your eyes or nose as it can irritate your mucous membranes.

2. Treat Bronchitis

Practice hyssop EO aromatherapy for 30 to 60 minutes several times a day to treat bronchitis. Just put 3 to 5 drops in your diffuser or, if you don’t have a diffuser, put the hyssop oil in a pan of hot water. Heat the water until it begins to steam. It doesn’t need to be boiling. Drape a towel over your head, hold your head over the steam and inhale deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth for a few minutes.

Hyssop oil’s anti-spasmodic and expectorant properties will help relieve your chest congestion while its antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-viral properties will help your body heal. Be sure to drink plenty of fresh water to help the hyssop oil thin the mucous. You can also massage the hyssop/carrier oil blend into your throat, chest, sides and back. It will be absorbed into your skin and circulatory system. If you prefer, you can add 2 to 3 drops to other essential oils and a little beeswax for a potent natural vapor rub.

*Do not use hyssop EO if you have epilepsy. It contains Pinocamphone which may overstimulate the nerves.*

3. Alleviate Sore Throat

Massage the 1% to 3% hyssop/carrier oil blend into your throat when it is sore. You can use any type of carrier oil with hyssop. Coconut oil, jojoba, sweet almond, argan or avocado oil will all work well. Hyssop aromatherapy can alleviate a sore throat, too. You can drink some hyssop tea to get relief, too.

If you are going to make a cup of hyssop tea, be sure you get food-grade hyssop oil, use only 1 to 2 drops to a cup of tea and don’t drink more than two cups in a day. Oils that are sold for aromatherapy are not usually safe to ingest. Manufacturers will also occasionally combine the essential oil with a less expensive oil to increase their profits. The result will likely still be good for aromatherapy, but you shouldn’t put it in your tea.

*You can get hyssop tea bags, which is better if you want to drink more than two cups a day.*

4. Quiet Coughs

Mix 1 drop of food-grade hyssop essential oil into 1 teaspoon of honey and take it to quiet your cough. You can add it to other essential oils, too, for a potent cough syrup blend. Here, again, make sure you are getting food grade oils. I have found that you can get all the great essential oil benefits just from putting it on the skin or inhaling it. You can also gargle with hyssop oil for sore throat and cough relief. Just add 1 to 2 drops to a glass of water.

Important Note: Whatever you choose for an oil, make sure that the oils you purchase are high quality. Remember, you’re breathing this oil into your lungs so essential oil quality is a terrible place to cut corners.

5. Soothe Sore, Achy Muscles

Use a 1% to 3% hyssop oil/carrier oil blend to massage sore, achy muscles. It will quickly improve circulation to speed healing and reduce muscle soreness. You can use it a couple times a day. A stronger blend can be used for this, up to 10% to 25%, but you don’t want to use it at that strength for more than two weeks. Rubbing the blend into the bottoms of your feet can help reduce a fever.

6. Stop Muscle Spasms

Massage a hyssop/carrier oil blend into muscles if you get a cramp or spasm. Hyssop oil’s anti-spasmodic properties will stop the spasm and relieve the pain.

7. Treat Arthritis

Rub the hyssop EO/carrier oil blend into achy joints if you have arthritis. It will increase circulation in the area and reduce inflammation. You may want to use the stronger blend for this if your arthritis is really acting up. Only use it on occasion, though, and don’t use a stronger blend than you need. Start with a 1% to 3% blend and gradually make it stronger until you find a strength that works.

*Stronger dilution rates should only be used for 10 days to 2 weeks at a time. The 1% to 3% dilution rate (1 to 3 drops per teaspoon) is fine for everyday use.*

8. Alleviate Gout

Use hyssop oil to treat gout in the same way as you would to treat arthritis. Gently massage the hyssop oil/carrier oil blend into the affected area. The oil will increase circulation, help reduce swelling and inflammation and assist in the removal of uric acid.

Hyssop oil will also improve your immune system when you use it to get your digestive tract working more efficiently. It is all connected. When the digestive tract isn’t functioning properly, our bodies don’t get everything they need in order to be at their best and resist disease.

15. Reduce the Appearance of Scars

Mix 2 to 3 drops of hyssop essential oil into 1 teaspoon of carrier oil and apply it to scars and stretchmarks. Its antiseptic and astringent properties will clear and tone the skin. Jojoba oil is an excellent carrier oil for this. It helps balance the skin’s natural sebum production and contains vitamin E and vitamin B complex, both of which are good for the skin. If you prefer a lighter oil, try argan or sweet almond. You can also mix it into your favorite lotion.

*Do not use hyssop essential oil while pregnant, nursing or on young children.*

16. Treat Acne

Use hyssop essential oil in the same way as you would for scars to treat acne. Its antibacterial and circulation-increasing properties will help heal the acne while the antiseptic and astringent properties prevent scarring. Wash your face with a mild cleanser first. Always use a face cleanser that is formulated for use on the face. The skin on your face is different than the rest of your body and should be washed with a different type of cleanser.

17. Alleviate Dermatitis and Eczema

Apply a 2% to 3% hyssop essential oil/carrier oil blend to the skin where eczema and dermatitis are a problem. Jojoba oil is also ideal for this purpose. It has anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties that can help clear up eczema and dermatitis, too.

Use a 1% to 2% hyssop essential oil/carrier oil blend to firm and tone your skin all over. Its astringent and antiseptic properties naturally brighten and firm the skin. You can use any carrier oil that you like for this. Coconut oil has many great benefits for the skin. Jojoba oil is, of course, very good for the skin, especially if you have dry skin. If you tend to have oily skin, you might prefer a lighter oil. If you have a body lotion that you already like, you can just add a little hyssop oil to that.

19. Reduce Menstrual Discomfort

Practice hyssop aromatherapy for 30 to 60 minutes to get relief from cramps, headache, fatigue, mood swings, nausea and appetite loss.
