19 Wonderful Uses for Cucumber Seed Oil

Cucumber seed oil is cold pressed from cucumber seeds. The botanical name for cucumber plants is Cucumis sativus. This is a fixed or non-volatile oil that is high in linoleic acid, oleaic acid and phytosterols. It can be applied to the skin without a carrier oil; however, cucumber oil is generally diluted to a strength of 3% to 5%.

This cooling oil is used to treat skin conditions, bacterial infections, respiratory infections, digestive tract problems, inflammation, edema, fever, constipation, arthritis, gout, obesity, hair loss and diabetes.

It has anthelmintic, antibacterial, anti-cancerous, anti-dandruff, antidote, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, anti-stress, anti-ulcer, demulcent, diuretic, febrifuge, laxative, purgative and vermifuge therapeutic properties.

1. Alleviate Arthritis

Massage cucumber seed oil into inflamed, achy arthritis-afflicted joints to reduce the inflammation and swelling. A blend of 1/2 teaspoon of cucumber seed oil, 1/2 teaspoon of babassu, baobab or coconut oil and 2 to 4 drops of ylang ylang essential oil is very effective for treating arthritis and relieving pain.

2. Get Rid of Gout

Use the same cucumber seed oil blend to treat gout. The analgesic and anesthetic properties in ylang ylang will quickly alleviate pain while the anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties of cucumber seed oil reduce the inflammation and fluids that accumulate in the joints.

3. Reduce Inflammation

Apply a 2% cucumber seed oil/carrier oil blend to inflamed areas for relief. You can use a half and half mixture of cucumber seed oil and sweet almond oil for this purpose, too. Cucumber seed EO aromatherapy is also good for reducing inflammation. The oil has an earthy, herbaceous, light cucumber fragrance that most people enjoy.

4. Improve Digestion

Save

Mix 10 drops of cucumber seed oil with 2 drops of peppermint essential oil. Massage the blend into your chest and abdomen to improve digestion. This is a very cooling blend. You can add 5 or 6 drops of the same blend to your diffuser and run it during mealtime for pleasant aromatherapy and enhanced digestion.

7. Reduce Cholesterol Levels

Save

Cucumber seed extract has been proven to lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol. You can take 1 drop of cucumber seed oil orally each day for this benefit. A clinical study showed that 500 mg of cucumber seed extract once a day had positive results. You should not take 500 mg of cucumber oil, though. That is roughly equal to 10 drops. Just 1 drop per day in water or a vege cap taken with the biggest meal of the day should help. The phytosterols in cucumber seed oil block the absorption of cholesterol. Make sure you are getting 100% pure, organic cucumber seed oil, if you are going to ingest it.

8. Stabilize Glucose Levels

Massage cucumber oil into your upper abdomen to help control diabetes. It naturally encourages insulin secretion from the pancreas. You can also add 5 to 6 drops of cucumber seed oil to 1/2 to 1 cup of your liquid body wash for this benefit.

9. Soothe Sunburns

Gently, apply cucumber seed oil to sunburned skin. Its phytosterols and fatty acids can help repair the skins lipid barrier. It will also provide quick, cooling relief. If the skin is too sensitive to touch, mix up a cooling spray with aloe vera juice, cucumber seed oil (instead of coconut oil), lavender oil and peppermint oil.

For even better results, add 1 drop of frankincense essential oil and 1 drop of neroli essential oil to 1/2 teaspoon of cucumber seed oil and 1/2 teaspoon of rose hip seed oil. This combination will naturally reduce the swelling, smooth wrinkles and improve the skin’s elasticity.

*Don’t put cucumber seed EO, or any oil, on your eyelids. It will gradually work its way into your eyes. Instead, dab it around the eye socket. The oil will be absorbed into the skin around the eye and the eyelids.*

14. Improve Skin’s Overall Condition

Moisturize once or twice a day with a 1% to 2% cucumber seed oil blend to improve skin’s elasticity and overall health and appearance. You can blend 1 drop of cucumber seed EO with 1 to 2 drops of rose essential oil, carrot seed essential oil, orange essential oil or ylang ylang essential oil for an even better skin-improving blend. Argan oil is a nice carrier oil for this purpose. Rosehip seed oil is a little lighter than argan and jojoba is a little heavier. Both are great for improving the skin. They also help regulate the skin’s sebum production, which can be especially helpful for young, acne-prone skin and mature, dry skin.

This oil hasn’t gotten a lot of attention in the realm of clinical studies, although there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of its efficacy.

One of the greatest things about this oil is that it has all of these benefits but isn’t a volatile oil. You can use it full strength without worrying about skin irritation. It can also be put in the diffuser for room-freshening aromatherapy. You can get it for about the same price as Argan oil, too.
