30 Incredible Uses of Neroli Essential Oil

Neroli essential oil (buy it here) is a citrus oil, but it isn’t made from the fruit. It is made from the same citrus trees as petitgrain, but there is one big difference – it is made from the flowers. Petitgrain is distilled from the twigs, leaves and un-ripened fruit. So, we’ve got two different oils being produced from the same trees. Nothing from these bitter orange trees is wasted. The tree species is known botanically as Citrus aurantium.

There is some overlap in all of the incredible uses of neroli and petitgrain, although there are some very striking differences. One of those differences should come as no surprise. Neroli smells like orange blossoms. It is a wonderful, floral, feminine fragrance. I am always pleased to find something that smells so heavenly that also has so many incredible uses.

1. Alleviate Pain

Use neroli essential oil for pain relief just about anywhere on the body. Mix 1 to 3 drops of neroli into 1 teaspoon of any carrier oil you like. Apply the mixture to the painful area. Neroli EO aromatherapy is also great for this, especially if you are experiencing widespread pain. Simply add 2 to 4 drops to your diffuser along with 1/2 to 1 cup of distilled water and run it for 30 to 60 minutes. Go ahead and take a few deep breaths of the steam for fast relief.

2. Reduce Inflammation

Use neroli EO to reduce inflammation in the same way as you would for pain relief. It is especially effective against acute chronic inflammation. You can use a stronger dilution rate, if you need to. Start out with the 1% to 3% solution, though, and increase the strength gradually. Any type of carrier oil can be used with neroli. Coconut oil and sweet almond oil are great as well as jojoba, argan and avocado.

*Stronger dilution rates should only be used for 10 days to 2 weeks at a time. The 1% to 3% dilution rate (1 to 3 drops per teaspoon) is fine for everyday use.*

3. Reduce Stress

Practice neroli oil aromatherapy for stress relief. You can run your diffuser on your desk in the office or in a quiet, dimly-lit room for a more relaxing aromatherapy session. You can also take a soothing bath with 3 to 4 drops of neroli oil in the water. A warm footbath with a few drops of neroli oil works wonders as well.

4. Calm Anxiety or Panic

Rub a few drops of the 1% to 3% neroli oil/carrier oil blend in your palms to warm it up. Massage the warmed oil into the back of your neck and chest then cup your hands and inhale the vapors. You will feel your anxiety or panic slowly melt away. Aromatherapy is also great for this as well as a neroli oil bath. For quick relief, simply inhale the vapors from the neroli EO bottle. Breathe in deeply through the nose, into the sinuses and chest then exhale through the mouth.

5. Alleviate Depression

Practice neroli essential oil aromatherapy for 30 to 60 minutes several times a day to alleviate depression. It will soothe you and improve your overall outlook on life. If you are going to be away from home, keep the bottle with you and simply take a few inhales of the vapors directly from the bottle if you begin to feel blue.

6. Control Cortisol Levels

Use neroli oil to control cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone that your body needs in order to perform certain functions, like the conversion of sugar and fats into energy and stress management. Excess stress and poor sleep habits can throw cortisol levels off to such an extent that it can be really unhealthy. Neroli oil has been proven to help the body maintain healthy cortisol levels. Aromatherapy is excellent for this.

Additional oils that may help and can be blended with neroli are clary sage (buy it here), ginger (buy it here), jasmine (buy it here), lavender (buy it here), sandalwood (buy it here) and ylang ylang (buy it here). Don’t overdo it, though. Only combine a few and still use the same amount of essential oil. For example, you can put 1 to 2 drops each of a few different oils in your diffuser with 1 cup of water. You could also add 2 drops each of a few different oils to 1 Tablespoon (3 teaspoons) of a carrier oil for a 2% dilution rate.

28. Kill Germs in the Air

Run your diffuser with a few drops of neroli essential oil in it to kill germs, bacteria and fungal spores in the air around you. This is especially beneficial during cold and flu season. 29. Prevent Underarm Odor

Apply the 1% to 3% blend to your armpits after you get out of the shower to prevent underarm odor. It is a natural deodorant with its antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties. Also, it smells fabulous. Every time you lift your arm, the heavenly smell of orange blossoms will waft up around you.

30. Prevent Body Odor

Add 25 drops of neroli oil to 1/2 cup of water in a spray bottle and use it as a fragrant body spray. You will be getting its other beneficial properties, in addition to its divine scent. The essential oil molecules are quickly absorbed into the skin.
