Amazing Benefits of Vetiver Essential Oil

Vetiver essential oil has some very surprising uses. This oil has been scientifically proven to treat some conditions which have had to be treated with medications in the past. I was so pleased to find out about this essential oil. Natural remedies are preferable to unnatural, chemical medications, as far as I’m concerned.

Vetiver essential oil has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, sedative, aphrodisiac, nervine, cicatrisant, vulnerary and tonic properties. I’m sure you will be as surprised as I was by how beneficial vetiver EO is.

1. Cool Down

Use vetiver EO to cool down your body on hot summer days. It can even help prevent heat stroke. Add 5 to 10 drops of vetiver oil to a tepid bath and take a 15- to 30-minute soak. If you are away from home or are unable to take a bath, put 3 to 5 drops of vetiver oil into a bowl of tepid water and splash it on your face and body. You can also soak a washcloth or small towel in the vetiver oil water, wring it out, dab it on your face and body then lay it over your forehead. Vetiver aromatherapy can also help.

2. Reduce a Fever

Use the vetiver essential oil to lower your fever. Put 3 to 5 drops of vetiver oil in your diffuser and run it for 30 to 60 minutes. You can do this off and on throughout the day and night. Try taking 5 deep inhales from the diffuser when you first turn it on to get the beneficial properties into your sinuses. They will absorb into your system through the sinuses and throat.

Vetiver oil is rather thick to begin with and gets thicker as it ages. It can clog some diffusers. To avoid this, mix vetiver with 2 to 3 drops of peppermint EO or lavender EO then put 3 to 5 drops of the essential oil blend into your diffuser. Peppermint and lavender are also excellent for reducing a fever. A vetiver oil bath or a cloth with vetiver oil water can also be used for this purpose. You can add the peppermint and lavender oils to your bowl of water or bathwater, too.

Important Note: Whatever you choose for an oil, make sure that the oils you purchase are high quality. Remember, you’re breathing this oil into your lungs so essential oil quality is a terrible place to cut corners.

3. Alleviate Arthritis Pain

Mix vetiver oil into a carrier oil and massage it into painful joints. Start out with 1 to 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil. You can increase the amount of vetiver oil to as much as 25% or 1/4 teaspoon per 3/4 teaspoon of carrier oil for better pain relief, if necessary. You shouldn’t use it at this strength for more than 10 days at a time, though.

4. Relieve Muscle Aches

Massage the vetiver essential oil/carrier oil blend into sore, achy muscles for fast relief. Use the lower dose at first. If you need something stronger, gradually increase the amount of vetiver oil. You can use any carrier oil you like. Argan, jojoba, sweet almond and coconut oil all work really well for muscle rubs. I prefer to use 1 teaspoon of coconut oil with a few drops of argan oil as my basic carrier oil. The argan oil just seems to help the coconut oil (can also be taken internally as a pill) and essential oil absorb into my skin more quickly.

Vetiver is also called khus (vetiver) or ruh khus (wild vetiver).

5. Get Rid of Headaches

Practice vetiver oil aromatherapy to get rid of a headache. It is especially wonderful for getting rid of stress headaches. Put 3 to 5 drops into your diffuser and run it for 30 to 60 minutes. Your vetiver/peppermint/lavender blend is ideal for this use, too. Take 5 deep inhales through your nose to get the beneficial properties working more quickly. You can also place a drop of vetiver oil/carrier oil blend on your temples with your fingertips for relief.

6. Relieve Anxiety

Rub your vetiver/carrier oil blend in your hands then cup your hands over your nose and take a few deep breaths when you feel anxious. It will quickly calm you. Massage the oil blend into your shoulders and lower back to calm yourself. Try blending vetiver oil with a few drops of clary sage essential oil and a few drops of ylang ylang or lavender then mixing 2 to 3 drops of that with a teaspoon of carrier oil for an anxiety quelling blend.

You can also blend the vetiver with clary sage and ylang ylang or lavender then add 3 to 5 drops of the essential oil blend to your diffuser for an anxiety-relieving aromatherapy session. You should generally run your diffuser for only 30 to 60 minutes at a time.

7. Alleviate Nervous Tension

Use the vetiver/clary sage/ylang ylang or lavender with carrier oil blend to relieve nervous tension. Just rub a few drops of the blend into the back of your neck, shoulders, throat and chest. Your nervous tension will melt away.

12. Improve Hormone Balance

Practice vetiver aromatherapy or use the vetiver/carrier oil blend to get your hormones back on track. Stress upsets the natural hormone balance and causes our bodies to produce cortisol, also known as the stress hormone. Vetiver essential oil helps reduce cortisol and bring your hormones back to healthy levels. Blending it with clary sage or ylang ylang then using that essential oil blend in your diffuser is excellent for this.

*Do not use vetiver EO if you are pregnant or nursing, even though it has been used to increase breastmilk production. The oil’s effects on babies has not been clinically studied.*

14. Treat ADHD/ADD

Use vetiver essential oil to treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It has been proven to reduce symptoms in a clinical study. It has only been studied with children over 6 years of age, though. It should not be used for the treatment of younger children. Simply take 3 deep inhales of vetiver essential oil vapors through the nose 3 times a day. Positive results were clearly evident within 30 days. You can inhale the vapors directly from the vetiver oil bottle. You don’t even have to put it in a diffuser.

15. Heal Skin and Reduce Scars

Apply vetiver essential oil to sores and scars. It speeds healing and reduces the appearance of scars. Its antiseptic properties kill bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and germs while the anti-inflammatory properties soothe the area and reduce inflammation. You can use the 25% vetiver/carrier oil solution for this several times a day.

Be sure to wash the sore first with mild soap. Use the same 25% solution for up to 10 days to reduce the appearance of scars. Its cicatrisant properties reduce scars from wounds, burns and stretch marks. This oil is surprisingly good at clearing up acne, too. Just mix it into a non-greasy carrier oil like argan and apply it to acne-prone skin twice a day after you wash.

Was this list helpful to you? I was amazed by all of the incredible uses for this earthy-scented essential oil. Some people don’t like the way vetiver oil smells at first but most people grow to love the fragrance.

It is commonly described as a smoky, earthy scent, similar to a campfire that was recently put out. Give this great essential oil a try, if you haven’t already.
