One of the main ways I pursue my goal of staying healthy and looking (relatively) hot for the foreseeable future is by using essential oils.

I use essential oils for everything from household chores to my health and beauty regimen, but I had never used them in the shower.

I’m always looking for ways to de-stress (and if I’m being honest…for ways to pamper myself like a suburban princess) and I kept seeing the ESSIO aromatherapy shower kit everywhere I looked online.

So I decided to try this out for myself, and here we are. First off, let’s talk about what ESSIO is and how it works.

How Does ESSIO Aromatherapy Shower Kit Work?

The ESSIO Aromatherapy Shower Kit is an extremely unique product that combines traditional aromatherapy practices with your normal shower.

It is a small pod that attaches to the support of your shower head, and then sits just within the stream of water ​from the shower head.

This pod is filled with key essential oils, which diffuse into the air as they hit the stream of water.

The steam and humidity from the hot shower open your airways and clear your nasal passages, facilitating the inhalation of the essential oils. This enhances their effects on the body, making it a great complement to a traditional essential oil diffuser.

The ESSIO Aromatherapy Shower Kit comes with three unique essential oil blends:

• Unwind – For relaxation and stress reduction.
• Breathe – For opening up congested airways, great when you’re under the weather.
• Passion – For when you’re sharing a shower with a significant other…

The Unwind blend is the one that most interested me and it is a mixture of essential oils from citrus, flowers and spices.

I learned that ESSIO is used as a spa treatment at some high end hotels and resorts, including: The Ritz-Carlton, The Venetian, Mandarin Oriental, and the Four Seasons. It does deliver a luxurious feeling shower, so I’m not surprised by that.

Is ESSIO Easy to Use?

The design is actually simpler than you might think and the process of attaching it to the shower head is simple and intuitive.

Once attached, all you have to do is adjust the kit in such a way that the aromatherapy oil diffuser is just within the stream of water leaving the shower head–then simply turn on the water and enjoy.

One important note is that the pods do run out of essential oil. Anyone who owns an essential oil diffuser of any kind won’t be surprised by that.

How to Install ESSIO:

The pods are advertised to be good for about 3-4 showers before they need replacing. This means that after you have used up the three pods provided with the product, you will have to invest in some more oils.

You don’t have to buy more pods though, only more oils. I am already pretty handy with blending my own essential oils and I have certain brands that I use for the sake of purity and performance, so this is ideal. It’s also far cheaper than making you buy more pods.

Who Is ESSIO For?

The ESSIO is really for anyone who likes essential oils and wants to apply their effects to their shower.

The effects of essential oils are wide-ranging; there are far too many to cover here, but you can create a blend for virtually any emotion or state you want to promote or condition you’d like to treat.

Who Should NOT Use ESSIO?

The essential oils that come pre-loaded in the pods are very safe. This is particularly true when inhaled through what is basically a diffuser like the ESSIO Shower Kit (rather than directly applied topically to the skin or ingested, which you should NOT do without professional guidance).

However, it is important to note that there is insufficient research on the use of these oils during pregnancy. Moreover, given that some people believe that essential oils can cross the placental barrier and harm the fetus, it may be in your best interest to avoid using in this scenario–at least until the research suggest that this is not the case.

Also, if you refill the pods with your own blends, the safety of the oils is then up to you. All essential oils are NOT safe for all people, not by a long shot. So do your research if you go that route.

Is the ESSIO Effective?

I was actually pretty excited to give this one a go. I’m already big on aromatherapy, and I seek out spa-like pampering experiences like a blood hound so this seems like a really good fit for me.

I actually went a little crazy and got the buy 2, get one 80% off deal and installed one in my bathroom, one in the kids bathroom and sent one to my mother as a gift.

It took about 5 minutes to set the pod up in the shower–which was pretty simple to do (and the instructions were well laid out, which also helped).

The first thing I can say is that this product smells great–and really adds a nice layer to what is an already fairly relaxing experience.

The scent of the oils isn’t overpowering at all, I would actually describe it as sublime. It’s funny because it’s such a simple device, but it does make the shower seem like more of a luxury experience.

I was also pleasantly surprised that some of the worries I had about it were not issues at all.

First, I was worried that it would make the floor slippery or leave an oily residue on my skin or my hair. This didn’t happen at all. Much like any other diffuser, the amount of oil dispensed relative to the carrier (water, in this case) is very small. So it just isn’t a high enough concentration of oil to cause problems like that.

Second, I’m a purist when it comes to essential oils so I was worried they’d include some low quality oils. That also wasn’t the case, they sent organic oils that seemed to be of reasonably high quality. I still prefer to load my own oils that I know are awesome and blend them myself, but I wasn’t put off by what they sent.

Lastly, the company claims the product is sustainably produced. I’m not sure how that’s possible when it’s primarily constructed of plastic. So call me skeptical of this claim, but it’s hardly the only thing in my house made of plastic.
